Eat locally, if you can

I like the idea of eating locally. Not only is the food fresher than I'd get in the supermarket, but the money I spend on such food stays in the local economy. Further, I like knowing exactly where my food comes from and that its carbon footprint is relatively small.

Apparently Gov. John Lynch feels the same way. He proclaimed Aug. 3-9, as New Hampshire Eat Local Week .

Here in Manchester, however, being a localvore isn't exactly easy.

Well, it's easy if you can make it downtown between the hours of 3 and 6:30 p.m. on Thursdays. Those are the hours of operation of the Downtown Manchester Farmers Market. Work until 5 or 6 and then have to head straight home to get dinner on the table? Work second shift? Sorry: no fresh local food for you.

According to an article in this week's Hippo Press, demand for local food is skyrocketing. As such, one might think organizers of farmers markets might schedule them with their potential customers' schedules in mind. To me, Saturday morning is the perfect time. Maybe not for everyone, of course, but certainly more than can make it on Thursday afternoons. Other towns seem to have figured this out. Drive outside of the city [if you a) have a car; and b) can afford the gas] on any given Saturday between June and October and you'll see farmers markets and farm stands galore.

I'm sure there are some here in Manchester who are able to pull off a localvore diet. My question is how do you do it, especially if you don't have much of a yard to grow your own food?
