For Organizing for Social Change is probably the best book on the market these days that provides the reader the fundamentals of direct action organizing. And Manchester, NH, could use a little more organizing.

Community organizing came to the forefront of our political discourse during the 2008 presidential campaign, when Sarah Palin, et al, derided Obama’s organizing background.

Local businesses, especially specialty shops like Runners Alley, employ folks who are, generally speaking, more knowledgeable about their products than their chain counterparts. And when I'm spending upwards of $100 on a pair of shoes, I want that level of expertise.

I've been making more of an attempt to shop locally the past few years. For while I might pay a few more bucks than at the national chains for the same purchases, those extra dollars are more likely to stay here in Manchester, NH, rather than heading off to corporate headquarters and shareholders across the world.

But in practice, I’m lazy.

When I moved to Manchester, NH, six years ago this month, I chose to do my banking with Citizens Bank for simple reason that their Elm Street headquarters and adjacent ATMs were just two blocks from my office. I've thought about switching to St. Mary's, Manchester’s hometown credit union, but have never actually gotten around to it.

Now if it were a matter of simply moving an account or two to St. Mary’s I would probably have done so a few years ago. But it’s not that simple. For not only would I have to close my Citizens accounts and move the money to St. Mary’s, I would also have to set up a new direct deposit procedure and switch all of my online bill payments, up to and including the bank draft that takes care of my mortgage payment automatically.

In short, it would be a hassle, which is why I haven’t taken the leap heretofore. But that’s about to change, and it took a trip to Scotland to give me the push I needed.

Being that Citizens Bank is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS), I assumed (naively, as it turned out), that I would not be charged foreign ATM fees if I used my Citizens Bank debit card to withdraw money from RBS cash machines. In fact, a friendly Citizens employee informed me, I would be charged by both Citizens and RBS for the privilege of using RBS equipment, even though they’re the same company!

Unbelievable.

I know banks are in business to make money, and I’m okay with that, but come on.
